Storyboard & Proposal

Creating this storyboard and proposal was a completely new experience for both me and my partner. We had both previously completed modules about design and technical writing, but we had never collectively used these skills for the purpose of creating an OER. This project was very enjoyable to work on me. My partner and I split the work effectively between us, meaning nobody was under immense pressure to do their part. We communicated ideas, first in class, and then through social media and video calls. Trying to logistically work out or plans for an OER was made more difficult by social distancing, but we overcame this obstacle by frequently contacting each other as we worked on our individual parts of the project.

We decided that I would concentrate on designing the storyboard and my partner would work on writing up the proposal. I begin by roughly drawing a flowchart in a simple notebook. I then began to sketch out the idea for each induvial page of the OER, keeping a consistent theme and style in mind while I drew. First drawing the design on paper helped me to better understand the design and I was choosing and how I wanted it to be presented on screen. I checked in with my partner and we agreed on the design.

I next used the graphic design software Canva to create the storyboard. This software is easy to use and preloaded with some images and fonts which worked perfectly with our intention. As we chose to present a proposal for an OER teaching primary school children about the solar system, I wanted to make sure my design was bright and colourful to attract and keep attention, while using child-friendly images of the planets and an astronaut narrator so that children could easily follow along the lesson.
